The Earth, the Sea, the Sky. These are boundaries that rising powers have struggled to control throughout history. Their apparent domination of the elements is only transitory. As we all know the elements are their own masters.

 

Here we see Canute’s fools echoing his mockery of flattering courtiers by showing that the sea would not retreat at his command.
